От графиките се вижда, че пределната полезност намалява и кривата е низходяща, а графиката на общата полезност е възходяща и е равна на сумата от всички пределни полезности придавани последователно към първата.

За пръв път разбиране за подобна зависимост наблюдава Даниел Бернули през 1758г. Забелязвайки, че хората продължават да играят на комар с намаляващо се желание не само когато губят, но и когато печелят. По-късно с тази зависимост се занимава и английският философ Джереми Бентам, който провъзгласи, че един от принципите, върху които трябва да се изгради обществото е полезността.
